This is one of the two marine national parks of Sri Lanka & is situated 1 km off the coast of Nilaveli. The island’s name derives from the Rock Pigeon which has colonized it. The national park contains some of the best remaining coral reefs of Sri Lanka.

The sea is crystal clear for about 300 m. We can easily see the bottom of the ocean for that stretch.

The boat ride which included 6 adults & 1 minor, cost us Rs. 1500. Inside the Nilaveli Beach Hotel the prices go up to Rs. 2500.  But you can find many independent boat owners along the beach. Bargaining is the key.

Life jackets & snorkeling equipment are provided by the boats, free of charge.  You can spend any amount of time you want in the Pigeon Island. Once you want to get back to mainland, you just have to call the boat on their mobile phone. (Our’s was 0716 794 238)

Before you leave to the pigeon Island make sure you inquire about the weather conditions, since if the sea gets rough after you’re in Pigeon Island, the returning boats will not be able to reach the island until the weather calms down.
